There are many people in the country who have been effected by the accidents caused by someone getting behind the wheel after having too much to drink. It actually happens much more than it should. This is exactly why the punishment for DUI is very harsh, as well it should be. It is meant to keep people from wanting to get caught and in turn, prevent them from doing it in the first place.

Whenever someone gets behind the wheel after drinking too much their reaction time is slowed, their judgement impaired, and their vision is also drastically affected. All of these factors prevent the person from being able to drive effectively. Especially when you consider the size and weight of the vehicle and the speeds it will be traveling at.

The people on the receiving end of the accident are in most cases, not drinking at all, do not drink, or are children. It usually seems to be the case, coincidence mostly, that those who get hurt are children. The worst part about this is that they are being prevented from living their lives by the stupidity of another.

That is exactly what it is, stupid. Which is why the punishment is meant to be hard on those who get caught doing it. One of the more uncommon things the offender is made to do is called a victim impact panel. This is meant to pull on the heart strings of the drunk driver. To make them feel guilt and remorse for what they did, hopefully preventing them from ever making such a choice again.

They are usually placed inside a room with a couple other people caught driving under the influence. There they are made to hear the sad stories of people who lost their loved ones. Lost their own limbs. Or lost their dreams and hopes, all because somebody did not want to call a cab for a ride home or call a friend who was sober.

Many times the person is also to wear what is called SCRAM bracelet. These are bracelets that they wear on their ankles that read the sweat produced by the person wearing it. When reading the sweat, it is able to determine if the person has had anything to drink at all. This is because they are ordered not to have any alcohol for a period of time.

If they end up getting caught drinking, they will spend time in jail. Losing the privilege of drinking is one such punishment for drinking and driving. Another more common one is jail time. People often spend time in jail for this crime, but many people say it is not enough. That they should spend more time in jail. Or at the least go to prison, not county jail.

In some states the punishment for DUI is said to fit the crime, but in still others people are not happy. They think people get off way too easy for committing this crime. They are fighting to increase jail time or the amount of fine they pay. Either way the goal is to make the offender suffer a bit for the pain they either cause or could have caused.
